Who We Are

The Sault Ste. Marie Humane Society is a non profit organization, also called The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), one of 59 across Ontario and affiliated with the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (OSPCA).

The Sault Ste. Marie Humane Society investigates cases of cruelty and neglect. SPCA Agents and Inspectors are empowered by the Ontario SPCA Act. They relieve animal suffering and distress by issuing orders, removing animals and laying charges under the Criminal Code of Canada. No funding is received for this vital action and donations are relied upon from those dedicated to helping to protect animals in need. Animal care and shelter is provided to those who are abused, neglected and unwanted. Staff and volunteers are focused on finding adoptive homes for these unwanted companion animals.

Under a contract with the municipality of Sault Ste. Marie, the city's pound is operated by the shelter and both the cat and dog by-laws are enforced. Dog licenses are sold and registered on behalf of the City of Sault Ste. Marie.
