Maggie aka Bailey with Mandy

"Here are a few pictures of Maggie aka Bailey, who we adopted on October 6 2010. I saw her on the Humane Society website and I knew we had to bring her home with us. I told my husband about her and the next day when I checked the website, I called him and told him that he needed to go and get her. She has been great company for our other dog Mandy (bigger dog in the pictures). We go for several walks a day and have also gone camping at Pancake; she really likes the trailer and the outdoors. She checked out Lake Superior but it might have been a little cold for her. She will probably not want to get out of the water next summer. She has eaten one comforter, the shifter on the steering column in the truck and a part of the console a couple of toys have also met there maker with her. When Maggie and Mandy get wrestling in the basement rec room, they have all the cushions off the couch. Sometimes we think "what were we thinking" and then she looks at us or gives us hugs and we can't help but laugh. She loves to give hugs. We have already taken her to Dr Palmer to get spayed and we also had a chip put in her. One of the things that we found out was that she can run really really fast - the zip line doesn't go far enough for her liking. She has been a wonderful addition to our family. Thank you for everything".... Carol, Rick, Mandy and Maggie

Kobi aka Lukas

"We adopted Kobi (aka Lukas) July 2008. I sent an update in your Jan-May09 section of Pet Stories. Unfortunately this will be my final submission on Kobi's behalf.

I wanted to share this with you as I have sent other updates of my boys over the years. On Monday August 30th Kobi was chasing his ball across the yard when his back legs suddenly gave out under him and he went down with a short period of yelps. After a few moments of him struggling to stand and being unable to do so, I noticed he was more panicked and not in pain. Then I noticed his back legs not moving. We rushed him to the 'on call' vet who happed to be our trusted Dr. Palmer. That night Kobi was showing no pain sensory in his back end and he'd lost control of his bowels and bladder. After a night of anti inflamatories and xrays, Dr. Palmer called down to an animal neurology clinic in Michigan. They said it could have been 'cartilaginous' something or other or a ruptured disk. Either way, chances were slim that Kobi would ever recover and it was very unlikely that he would ever have control of his bowels or bladder again. We had to say goodbye... Loralei Premo"

Here are a few words in his memory:

We're going to miss you Kobi!

His beauty and gentleness, strength and agility, courage and infinite energy are like nothing I have ever known. He has all the virtues of man, without his vices.

He ate the strap off my Mary-Jane’s and yet I could not scold that adorable puppy.

He chased his tail, balls, frisbees, leaves, even birds across the sky and I admired his innocence.

Sometimes he was sick during the night and I was comforted to know I could take care of him too.

He charged into thunder but hid between my legs when he heard a noise in the bush or saw a cat; I was happy to be given the opportunity to be his protector.

We hiked through the woods, played in the water, took leisurely walks in the evenings and biked to work. He surely loved his car rides, my well behaved boy! We had sleepovers with the terrifying kitty cats. We had play dates with Maggie. Mostly, we just did whatever, whenever, but together.

He was my best friend, my honest and true kindred spirit. His love and loyalty emanated every moment of everyday.

There are no words equivalent to the feelings felt deep within, aroused only by one’s canine companion. The world will be a little less fulfilling without you with by my side “moose”.

You were one-of-a-kind and I am sorry your time with us was so short. But I promise to honour your memory often by recalling the joy you brought to the lives of so many. I will think of you and remember all the peace & laughter you alone created with your presence. I’m so sorry I couldn’t fix this Kobi.

Here is the deepest secret nobody knows; here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud and the sky of the sky of a tree called life; which grows higher than the soul can hope or mind can hide; and this is the wonder that’s keeping the stars apart.

I carry your heart; I carry it in my heart.

Maddison and Rocco

"Two years ago I walked into the HS to help my mom pick one of the two Beagle/Basset hound mixes at the shelter. It turned out to be an easy choice - by the time we got there one of the dogs had already been adopted. And so, Rocco joined my parents' house. Problem was, on my way past one of the cages, a certain 9 month old Border Collie cross caught my eye and my heart. Maddison (then Breeze) put one paw timidly through the cage bars and swiped at my leg. Twenty minutes later, my mom and I walked out with two beautiful dogs. Rocco has been a good companion for my parents' old Springer Spaniel, Scout and their cats Zeus (also a former adoptee) and Max, while Maddison has spent the last two years wreaking havoc with my Black Lab cross, Chara. Here they all are in what I like to call the "puppy pile" on a visit to my parents' house, tuckered out from a long day of play, and a couple more of Maddison doing her favourite things - hiking, snuggling with her new sister and sneaking a nap on the bed. Thank you, HS, for doing what you do."

Phoebe

"Twelve years ago I walked into the Humane Society with a heavy heart; one of my dear companions had left me suddenly. I just went to look, to test the waters, so to speak, and see if I was ready for a new furry friend. Just as I was ready to leave, this little skinny Calico decided that I was not leaving without her. She cried and cried, tried to climb up my leg, even went as far as try and run out the door as I was leaving the cat room. Then she pawed the glass, and I could silently seeing her meowing behind the glass. The woman beside me said "I do believe you have been adopted". Yes I was. I took the little skinny Calico home that day. She was named Rhoda at the Humane Society, I renamed her Phoebe. She came around quickly, and was not only a comfort to me but to my other cat; they became best friends. She didnt really meow, but she beeped and purred like a motorboat.

So it is with great sadness that I pass this message on. A week ago, Phoebe ran to the Rainbow Bridge. She was diagnosed with lymphoma, and taken away from us far too soon. She is greatly missed by all who loved her.

I know someday soon when I am ready, I will once walk into the Humane Society with a heavy heart, but I know that I will leave with yet another furry companion and experience the love and friendship once again. R.I.P Phoebe and run free until we meet again...."Alexis LaCasse

Chai aka Duster and Pekoe aka Latte

"We adopted Duster (renamed Chai) and Latte (renamed Pekoe) on Monday July 5th, 2010. Our dog Jada is so, so curious about them, and Pekoe just loves her. As soon as we brought Pekoe in to introduce her to the dog, Jada soaked her in kisses, and Pekoe didnt stop purring. Chai is having a bit of a harder time adjusting, but he's slowly getting used to Jada's big floppy love. Both the kittens are the biggest sucks; all you have to do is walk by them and they purr the loudest purr you will ever hear. They are polar opposites, but the best of friends. We already love them so much, and are so glad we could add them to our family"... Sincerely, Kristen, Patrick, and Jada
"Here's a couple of pictures of the kittens in their new home. Chai is much easier to get pictures of, Pekoe is always on the move!"

Peaches

"My name is Sumita Patel and I adopted my cat Peaches in 2002. She was just a tiny kitty that I feel in love with at your shelter. She is now living in Toronto with me and is 8 years old. I just wanted thank you for the job you do because I wouldn't have my Peaches if it wasn't for your shelter. Here is a picture of my Peaches.
Peaches has been huge part of my life and remember walking into your shelter 8 years ago and seeing my little Peaches. It was love at first sight and it won't have happen if it wasn't for you. Peaches is a very happy and spoiled cat. If she could talk she would thank you for saving her life and helping her find a forever home".... Sincerely, Sumita and Peaches Patel

Wagner aka Sunshine, Wilbur, Harley and Mirabelle

"Hello! We adopted Sunshine, now known as Wagner, Sunday, June 27. Wagner was very scared the first day and wouldn't eat, drink or come out from under the bed. After the full second day of no eating, we did a midnight run to the corner store to get a can of wet food. He ate the whole thing. He transformed after having a full belly. He was climbing all over us to get cuddles and attention and was even playing. He is still a bit nervous but is really coming along.

His new brother and best friend is Wilbur. Wilbur was adopted on June 30th, 2009. They get along really well and wrestle and play constantly. After being 'raised' by Harley and then 'raising' Mirabelle, we knew it was time for Wilbur to have a friend that was a little more his type; enter Wagner!

Wagner's two other siblings, Harley and Mirabelle, are very fond of him and constantly try to snuggle. They are so used to Wilbur that they don't realize that not all cats love them. If we place Wagner beside one of the dogs to cuddle, he will lay with them for a few minutes but then he remembers that "hey... I don't like dogs!" and swats them. Every day he is getting better though. He isn't scared to walk by them anymore and no longer runs away if they go near him.

Thank you so much for giving us these two wonderful babies! Wilbur, being my first HS baby, has always been very special to us and Wagner is quickly working his way into our hearts without any difficulty"... Justin and Amanda ... and Harley, Mirabelle, Wilbur and Wagner too...!

Akeena

"Hi, I adopted a dog from the shelter March 2009. Her name is Akeena. She has lots energy and loves everyone she knows. When she meets new people, she is very skittish. She loves to cuddle, loves her car rides, loves to walk, loves to go swimming and does really good off the leash. She also loves making new doggy friends too. I taught her to play fetch, to speak and dance. I'm working on teaching her new tricks. I could never give her up, she's my world. I don't know what I would do without her, I feel safer when she's around... Tracy"

Olli aka Woody

"My mom adopted Woody who we've renamed Olli in April and brought him to keep me company in Ottawa since this will be my first summer away from home. Although he wasn't too fond of his car ride he is very happy here. Olli is a little ball of energy who goes everywhere at top speed, investigates all nooks and crannies and loves playing with his toys. He is great company always waiting at the door for me when I get home from work and ready to cuddle after he's had his play time. He's fit into my life so seamlessly that I can't even remember life without him... Amanda"

"My mom had adopted K-9 for me December 1st, as a birthday present for me. He's been such a great pup to have around and is doing extremely well. He enjoys his long runs out in our back field every night." ... Ashley Hill
