Gypsy
"When
our best friend, Bandit, died suddenly at
the age of 13 1/2 years, on Christmas Eve 2003, we were
shocked and so sad. We decided that rescuing an old dog that was unwanted would
be the right thing to do in Bandit's memory. I called the Soo Humane Society
and asked about an older dog whose picture I had seen on the website; this dog
had been there quite a while. So, off we drove to the Soo with intention of
adopting the dog we called about. As fate would have it, that dog was adopted
15 minutes before we arrived. The staff working that shift said, "Well,
we still have Gypsy.........she has been
here for over three months." So, we decided to meet Gypsy, a nine year,
three month old Black Lab mix. Out walked a grey-muzzled old dog with a huge
wow in her spine. Her eyes were foggy and her teeth were not in good shape.
We wondered if we were putting ourselves in a position of losing another wonderful
friend very soon. Boy, were we wrong! Her favourite activity turned out to be
standing in the lake and waiting for golf balls to retrieve; she would do this
for hours on end. This old girl was so full of energy and, gratitude that we
cherish the three years and eight months that she was with us.
We really miss Gypsy but have adopted two
more dogs that had a rough start in their lives into our family. And, perhaps
even more importantly, we have begun being involved in rescuing unwanted dogs.......thanks
to our most cherished Gypsy."

Harley, Sunshine and Toby
"We
adopted Harley in March of '07. She was
a young pup and had just been dropped off a few days before. When I first saw
her I knew she was the one! Before taking her out the door, the staff warned
us that she did not like car rides, and they weren't lying! After a long drive
out to Goulais and a few dollars spent on car cleaning, I thought this isn't
going to work out. But, I wasn't going to give up on her that easily! Eventually,
after a few weeks of short trips, she grew to enjoy car rides! We had her spayed
in April and then found out that this young pup had hip displaysia...Once again,
I am not giving up on her...I found a great chiropractor for her in the states
and after a few months of weekly treatments she started coming around, now she
is doing great with the help of her vet and her chiropractor! We recently moved
to Chapleau and Harley just loves her trips back home. I don't know who gave
her up but I just want them to know that she is such a great companion; she
absolutely loves kids and she is no longer car sick! She has a great home and
although she has hip displaysia she is living a great life and she has made
a few friends along the way. I know that we are so happy to have her, and she
is a very happy girl. Here are a few pictures of Harley and her friends Sunshine
(also adopted) and Toby. Thanks so much
to the Humane Society; without you I wouldn't have Harley; she truly has changed
my life, and I feel that if I didn't get her then someone else might have given
up on her. Thanks Again!" ... Krystal MacDonald

Jack aka Kayden and his Pals
"Just
thought I'd send a pic of my newest addition to the family. Kayden,
now known as Jack, is fitting in very
nicely with his new family. He hit it off with his new big brother Simon
(fostered as a 6 week old kitten in July 2007, then adopted into the family)
instantly. He is getting along beautifully with my other cat Ginger
and my dog Lexi as well. I can't get
over how well this little guy integrated himself into our family. From the
minute we let him out of his carrier it was as though he were here all along.
We are looking forward to many more years with Jack and the rest our furry
family. I have included a couple of individual shots of all my "children"

Chevy aka Drover
![]() "We adopted Chevy (aka Drover) for Valentines Day in 2007. He loves fishing and swimming and loves his frequent visits to Bruce Mines to visit his Grandparents where he barks at the deer and does laps in the backyard and occasionally the pool, when he can sneak past his grandpa! Chevy is doing very well, loves to crawl in between us and hog the bed and blankets and loves the front seat in the boat on fishing trips. He is starting to calm down a bit and is very snuggley and lovable. We could not imagine our lives without him! Thank you!" ... Sarah and Thomas |

Zeus aka Rooney
"I thought I would give you an update on Rooney who was adopted Oct 2004. He is doing very well and has unpacked all of his baggage. He fell very ill in 2006 with Struvite Crystals and we thought we may have to say good bye. We owe many thanks to the caring staff at Northland Animal hospital, and are happy to report Rooney is doing well. We got Rooney a playmate named Parker two years ago -- I would have to say 2 pets are better than 1. Thank you again for being there. Without you, so many would not have that second, or third chance." ... Melissa

Chloe aka Penelope and Mystique aka Twinkle
"Chloe (aka Penelope) and Mystique (aka Twinkle) adjusted nicely to their new home and their new "siblings". While Chloe was at the shelter she had some issues with not eating and losing weight, but I am pleased to say she is eating like a little piglet now and I am confident she is going to be able to regain the weight she lost in no time :)" ... Kobi aka Lukas
"I
would first like to say a huge thank you to all those who staff, volunteer and
contribute to the function and sucess of our local Humane Society. There are
no words to express the wonderful work you do with such little funding and staff.
I adopted Kobi (aka Lukas) July 9, 2008. It took some time and careful watch for Dawson to accept him into our family but we cannot imagine our lives without him now. Kobi is a big boy, and still growing at 8 months. My boys are my pride and joy. I just wanted to take the time to let you know that not only your time, patience and effort is greatly appreciated but that you do find happy homes for these animals you shelter dispite the stuggles you endure at the Sault Ste. Marie Humane Society. I have included some pictures of the boys; 2 of Kobi as a pup, one of Kobi around 4/5 months (he just loves his car rides!) and 2 of both Dawson and Kobi: one nicely posing on our stairs and the other of them enjoying a nap on the back porch. Again, thank you!" Sincerely, Loralei Premo

Norma, Dora, and Tinkerbell
"Roughly
two winters ago, right before Christmas, I went down to the Humane Society with
my mother to look at some animals. We had looked at pet shops around the Sault
but we did not find what we were looking for. One day after going shopping,
my mother stopped at the Humane Society. I had not been there before. My mom
and I went in and looked around at the small pets for a few moments. We already
have a cat and a dog but we were looking for something small. I fell in love
with three small little guinea pigs. Two of them were in a cage together and
one was separate. The brown one was Norma
and the black one was Dora. The white with
black spots was named Tinkerbell. Tinkerbell
stared at me for a while but was really shy. Norma and Dora were also timid.
I looked at my mom and said to her "would it not be great to give three
animals a good Christmas and another chance at life". We bought all three
of them. Although we were thinking of only getting one, I walked in the house
that day with three guinea pigs, which even to this day, I completely adore.
It took awhile for them to get used to me and to not run away from me. I stayed
downstairs and slept beside them all for a few months and gave them all the
attention in the world. It paid off.
They
all have their own special personality and come to the edge of the cage and
gnaw on it whenever I call their names. Although Tinkerbell is in a huge cage
by herself she enjoys the freedom. I cannot possibly imagine living here without
them. I let them out several times a day to run around and "popcorn".
They love the treats I give them. Norma loves taking treats from Dora and Dora
loves nibbling on my fingers. Tinkerbell loves getting brushed and cuddled.
I do not know who left these guinea pigs at the Humane Society before Christmas,
but I thought I would write this to let them know that they are in a loving
home and get lots of attention. They are by far the best little bundles of joy
that have entered my life and I'm very thankful to have them." ...... Callie
