Bea

Our girl is 10 years old now. I didn't get her from the humane society but she was a rescue. She was 6 months old when I brought her home and has been with us since. She was diagnosed with diabetes last June and responding well with insulin injections. She is very well mannered and loves kids. I brought her home after I had received my last chemotherapy treatment. That was 10 years ago.

Jasper

I just adopted my cat Jasper from you about a month ago. He is just about 6 months old now, and he's wonderful company. He had a little bit of a cold when we got him home, but with some rest (as I'm sure you can see in the pictures) he was better in no time. I just wanted you to know that Jasper (Formally Clarence) is doing fantastic, and I love him with all my heart. He is learning to play fetch, and snuggles with me every night. As a first year college student who is undergoing alot of stress, getting Jasper was one of the best decisions I've made so far. He is always here to greet me and he makes me feel happy just to be with him. Thank you again for such a wonderful animal, and I just thought I'd let you know that he is doing wonderful!!!! P.S Jasper thanks you for the 2 weeks of care you provided him. He misses the staff tons!!!

Star

On Saturday January 3rd my husband (Craig Lee) and I adopted the nearly 10 year old, gold coloured dog named Star. I just wanted to send you a picture and give you an update on how she's doing.

Although for the first couple of nights Star was very nervous in her new home, she has now completely settled right in. She's very protective of us and her new home, so I think it's fair to say that she's a happy girl. She has taken very well to basic training, which has been easy because she is so good natured and seems to be pretty eager to please. She's still a bit highstrung when it comes to meeting other dogs, but we'll be working on socializing her a little bit at a time. Overall I'd say that she's just as happy with her new life as we are to have her be part of ours. We are all very happy.
By all means feel free to use the story and the picture on the website! We're very proud of Star and the way she has taken so well to her training. She still has a few things to learn, but she is a fast learner and our expectations are realistic. We know that it will take more time for her to learn certain things, and we're not trying to rush her. She's a great dog and we love her very much.
Once again, thanks to all at the humane society for Star, and for the good work you all do for all the other animals. Perhaps someday people will get the idea into their brains and there won't be as many unwanted animals in the world. I certainly hope so!
All the best to all of you

Misty and Lucy

Attached is a picture of my daughter with her cat Misty, and a picture of my cat Lucy.  Her dad adopted the cats about 11 years ago.  She enjoys being dressed up in doll clothes and being carried around like a baby.  Lucy doesn't like to dress up, but loves to sit on you when you sit down.  We also adopted a dog but, we had to give him up because we lived in Ontario Housing and the kids there would all bug him and he would bark all the time.  We gave him to a family member and he has been very happy, he is now 10 years old.  We just recently got another dog from friends and Lucy loves to bug this puppy.  The picture of Lucy is her in the puppy's cage and she was not letting the puppy in.  She has showed the puppy that she is the boss around our house and that even means the puppy's cage.  I think the Humane Society is a great place to get you animals from.  We have had a great experience there.  When I was little my parents adopted a little dog that we called "Waggles"  He live for 15 years.  my brother and I were about 5 and 6 years old when we got him and we had to put him to sleep when I was pregnant with my daughter.  It is hard losing an animal, but I just try and remember all the good times we had.  We always kept him on a leash tied up, but if he got off he would run away and we could chase him forever but my mom would always get in the car and go and find him.  It was if he knew that he would get a car ride, so that is why he would run away.  He was an awesome dog.  If I can find a picture of Waggles I will email it in.

Quincy

Dear friends at the Sault Ste. Marie Animal Shelter, I came across your website this fine morning and remembered the day that Quincy and I found each other. It was August 1997 when I was visiting and working in your city as a new graduate from seminary...I was preaching at Westminster Presbyterian in fact. Well, it was while I was visiting at a friend's home when I saw the animals that were up for adoption at that time on your local television station. The camera panned across the kennels of every breed imaginable and then....there he was! The reddish coat, the full white collar, the red spots on white legs, the perked-up ears and that look of...."how did I end up here?" Well I went to see him the following day....a hot Saturday afternoon....Quincy was focused on two pups arguing in their kennel together and my first impression was mixed....then we got to go outside...just the two of us and I let him run free in the fenced yard....he bounded through the long grass like a deer set free. But when I called to him about ten m inutes later, he pealed around the corner of the kennels and sat down right in front of me and I said, "Quincy, you just got yourself a home and if you want we'll be "partners in fun" from now on. Well, we've been partners in crime....just a couple of brats running wild in north eastern Ontario. Quincy has me and Ru (a spayed female part collie) and Snooky (a 22 year old black and white cat) as his family. He protects me with his life and I do the same for him. He is one of the greatest friends I have ever had the honour and pleasure of knowing....an angel dog. Thanks Sault Ste. Marie Humane Society....Quincy and Ru will be the front page for a new website being set up for the Temiskaming Veterinary Services...I don't know when it will be ready, but keep your eye out for them! Peace be with everyone...all creatures great and small, Sincerely, Rev. Linda J. Martin.

Zelda and Link and Attila

I adopted my cat Zelda (formerly Selena) from the Humane Society about 5 or 6 years ago. She's the chubby blue and red dilute (looks grey and orange). I had her when I lived with my parents. She was said not to be good with children. When I got pregnant and moved out on my own, my mother didn't want to let the cat go, and figuring I'd have my hands full, I left her with them. Recently, I moved into a new, bigger apartment with my son. My parents had decided they weren't sure they could give the cat adequate attention anymore, and so asked if I would like to take her, to which I accepted.

Being a believer that cats do better with friends of their own kind, I was back at the Humane Society on the hunt for a younger male cat for my old spayed girl. I didn't expect to find was I was looking for right away, but there he was. Bit over a year, got along well with other cats, lean shiny black thing. Sobey, now known as Link, came home with me shortly after with no debate in my mind. He stayed in a room alone until neutered and healed, then was introduced to Zelda.

At first it didn't go so well. He promptly fell in love with Zelda, while Zelda, not used to other cats, spent her time hissing and growling. But, as days passed she grew accustomed, and now they sleep together with me on my bed. They also both get along famously with my son (who will be 3 this August), but the fact that he's very good with animals and being rough with them isn't tolerated in my house helps, I'm sure. Link, who was said not to get along well with children, was even laying on his lap while my son watched TV last night.

Also adopted not all that long ago was Attila (formerly Rizzo) the rat. He lives in one of the 3 massive group cages of male rescue rats. I have him in with 4 buddies. Contrary to popular belief, rats do much better in same-sex pairs or groups. He's a very happy boy and has been for months.

Thank you very much for your wonderful services.

Cooper

Dana, Nova and I want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts. We feel so lucky to have found Cooper and still can't believe that someone didn't want such a great dog. He is so much fun and just perfect for us and our lifestyle.

Cooper loves us even more than we love him and is so very well-behaved. I feel a lot safer with his big bark to scare away would-be intruders and he is always so careful with my girls, Dana (aged 9) and Nova (aged 3). He is affectionate, playful and very sweet. It's an added bonus that he came to us with all his shots and neutering done, since we are on a pretty limited budget.

Thanks again for helping Cooper and us complete our family together. You folks are great!

Teddy

I adopted Teddy a few years back from the Sault Ste Marie Humane Society. He's a Chow mix, I've never met a dog with such a great disposition, he gets along great with everyone!! I've had kids run up to him and hug him while he's just sitting and wagging his tail, he's so quiet you don't even know he's around. He's not a very good guard dog at all, he's too happy to see people and would be the type of dog to show a stranger where the goodies are.

When I first saw Teddy at the Humane society, he was the only one there that wasn't barking, his fur was so matted you couldn't put your finger through it, and he's been abandoned on the Echo Bay hwy. I had walked over to him while he was lying in his Kennel at the Humane Society and he just wagged his tail at me. I had noticed that the way his fur made a heart shape around his face and I called him over, he walked over and looking at me with the sad puppy look he stuck his paw through the bars and put it gently into my hand. I had originally gone there to look at another dog but he just melted my heart and I couldn't resist to take him home.

He's been taught many tricks, one of his favorites is spinning slowly after I've groomed him to show off how good he looks...;-) Today he's got  two little brothers, all rescues from different humane societies. I've found that dogs that are rescued are exceptionally great dogs, they know that they've been given a second chance and they thank you every day for being there for them.

I'll send you pictures of the whole family soon! :-)

Teddy and Winston

I have sent photos of our 2 dogs, Teddy the terri-poo mix and Winston the heinz 57 mix, both adopted from the shelter.  They love their long walks everyday and love to play with other dogs.  They are both very well behaved, affectionate and loving.  They are an important part of our family as well as the cats.

Viper and Kitca

Thanks for adding our dogs to the site.  here are the cats.  Viper is over 14 years old and had been badly abused. She  had not been spayed, i think her hormonal yowling is what set her owners boyfriend into a frenzy.  thankfully the owner got her out of the house before she was hurt badly or killed.  I named her viper because she was not friendly towards people at all (who could blame her?!).  Now she is a very affectionate loving sweet cat who just wants to cuddle all the time. Kitca is about 12 years old, again came to us to foster badly abused, but we don't know her story.  it took her several years to trust us enough to pet and cuddle her.  she is very affectionate with us now, but not with strangers or even our regular guests.  as I've said, it took several years to slowly build her trust but  seeing her learn to trust is like a slowly unfolding blossom, well worth the long wait.
